Where to use underline text

Bios

Underline a short motto, not the searchable name. Combining marks count toward the cap. If the line collides with emoji on the next row, shorten it. Underlined legal names can look like links to a shop. If you do not want taps, skip underline on the name.

Captions

Underline a title word, then continue in plain text. Readers may think the word is a link — it is not. Don’t underline a URL you need people to copy accurately. If viewers tap the underlined word and nothing happens, you taught the wrong affordance. Use “link in bio” in plain letters. U+0332 coverage is good on current phones, but mark positioning varies. A line that sits on top of the next row is a font metrics issue, not a bad copy. Try a shorter word. Double underline would mean more marks and more failures. This page does not stack two U+0332 by default. U+0332 is Combining Low Line. Fonts that draw it as a macron-too-high will look like overline. Switch family or skip.

Hosts that strip combining marks will leave plain letters. That is different from NFKC folding of math bold. Test a three-letter paste. ASCII-only usernames reject the string. Plain-text paste in a desktop mail client will drop the mark. Paste in the social app’s field.
